The New Mayor Vows a 'New Era' for New York City in Maiden Address
In a first day in the mayor's office, Zohran Mamdani committed to “transform” New York City, promising “a different age” and an ambitious beginning to his tenure.
An Unprecedented Leader
The new political star, who was a relatively obscure state assemblyman, has become the city's first Muslim mayor. He additionally marked a milestone by being the first to be take the oath of office using the Qur'an.

The new mayor will deal with skepticism from some members of the Jewish community alarmed by his past stances regarding Israel. Sensitivities were revealed during the transition when a appointments director resigned over controversial past social media posts.
Mamdani has attempted to ease these tensions by convincing Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, preventing the optics of losing a Jewish police chief.

As his administration begins, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Queens apartment to the stately Gracie Mansion. The outgoing mayor offered a unusual warning about a supposed friendly ghost in the home, which reportedly only haunts those who fail to “do right by the city.”
Mamdani concluded his remarks with a simple statement: “The work has only just begun.”
