Powerful Explosions and Smoke Reported in the Heart of Tehran
According to on-the-ground reports, two loud blasts were heard in the city on Saturday. Correspondingly, two plumes of thick smoke were seen billowing over central and eastern districts of the city.
“The nature of these blasts indicates that this is a missile attack,” one news agency stated, though it did not immediately offer additional information.
Background: Escalating Strains and Prior Events
This event occurs against a background of severely escalated strains in the Middle East. Major events leading up to this attack include:
- US Military Buildup: A significant buildup of US naval forces in the Middle East, including the movement of aircraft carriers.
- Diplomatic Negotiations: Latest talks between the US and Iran on Tehran's nuclear programme ended inconclusively, with suggestions of more talks planned.
- Public Statements: Before the attack, a senior US official had described Iran as “the leading state sponsor of terrorism” and delivered threats regarding its missile program.
- Ultimatum: Allegedly, a time limit of roughly two weeks had been given to Iran to settle the nuclear dispute or face severe consequences.
Iranian Response
In response to prior accusations, Iranian authorities had accused the United States of spreading “big lies” about its defensive capabilities. Officials rejected claims about missile development and casualty figures as unfounded.
These developments remains fast-moving, with additional reports anticipated as the situation develops.
